{"id":19,"date":"2025-12-10T04:12:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T04:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kvkudalguri.aau.ac.in\/?page_id=19"},"modified":"2025-12-10T04:30:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T04:30:23","slug":"about-the-district","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kvkudalguri.aau.ac.in\/index.php\/about-the-district\/","title":{"rendered":"About the District"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Overview<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Udalguri district<\/strong>&nbsp;(Pron:\u02cc\u028ad\u028cl\u02c8g\u028a\u0259ri), also known as Odalguri, is a district in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bodoland_Territorial_Region\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bodoland Territorial Region<\/a>&nbsp;of the state of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assam\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Assam<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northeastern_India\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northeastern India<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Udalguri\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Udalguri<\/a>&nbsp;town is the headquarters of the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name Udalguri, denotes a place surrounding the Udal tree (Udal, meaning a tree and Guri meaning surrounding area). Some authors are of the opinion that the name of the place became Udalguri as there was a hermitage of a sage named Uddalak Muni. Yet, another source mentions that the word has origins in the Boro language. From the Bodo words&nbsp;<em>ordla<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>gundri<\/em>, the name became&nbsp;<em>Ordlagundri<\/em>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<em>Ordlagundi<\/em>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<em>Odalguri<\/em>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<em>Ugalguri<\/em>. Bodo people still pronounce the name as Odalguri. In Bodo language&nbsp;<em>ordla<\/em>&nbsp;means wide and spacious and&nbsp;<em>gundri<\/em>&nbsp;means powdered object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This district was formed on June 14, 2004&nbsp;as one of the four districts under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bodoland_Territorial_Council\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bodoland Territorial Council<\/a>. This district was carved out by bifurcating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darrang_district\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darrang district<\/a>.&nbsp;The territory of the present district was earlier Udalguri sub-division of the undivided district. There are Hindu, Christians and Muslim population living together in the district. This was a very peaceful place till mid 80s but various communal clashes took place from time to time. Late Jojaram Sharma was one of the prominent India freedom fighters from Assam lived here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why visit District Name?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than the multitude of culture and tradition of the various ethnic communities, the district has several tourist places. Other ethnic groups with significant population are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tea-tribes_of_Assam\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adivasi<\/a>&nbsp;community with almost 23.12% and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bengali_Muslims\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bengali Muslims<\/a>&nbsp;with 12% of the district&#8217;s population. Assamese and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bengali_Hindus\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bengali Hindus<\/a>&nbsp;resides mainly in urban areas.
