The foundations of agricultural research and education in Assam can be traced to the establishment of two rice research stations at Karimganj in 1913 and Titabor in 1923. These institutions initiated organised agricultural research and training in the region and subsequently paved the way for the establishment of the Assam Agricultural College at Jorhat and the Assam Veterinary College at Nagaon in 1948.

The establishment of these colleges was made possible through the leadership and vision of Bharat Ratna Late Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam, and other distinguished personalities.

Initially affiliated with Gauhati University and subsequently with Dibrugarh University, the colleges became constituent institutions of Assam Agricultural University upon its establishment in 1969.

Over the years, AAU has expanded its academic and research activities through constituent colleges, regional research stations and agricultural extension centres located across Assam.

Academic Programmes and Human Resource Development

Academic education constitutes one of the three principal mandates of Assam Agricultural University. The University provides undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in agricultural and allied disciplines, with emphasis on scientific knowledge, practical skills, research competence and professional development.

Through its constituent colleges and academic departments, AAU undertakes education and training in a wide range of disciplines:

  • Crop production
  • Horticulture
  • Plant breeding and genetics
  • Soil science
  • Agricultural engineering
  • Agricultural biotechnology
  • Agricultural economics
  • Extension education
  • Food science and technology
  • Tea husbandry

The University’s educational approach emphasises the development of competent agricultural professionals capable of addressing both regional and global challenges. Practical training, laboratory instruction, field experimentation and research-based learning form important components of its academic activities.

AAU also promotes institutional cooperation with national and international universities and scientific organisations to enhance opportunities for advanced education, specialised training and collaborative research.

Research and Technological Innovation

Agricultural research is central to the University’s mandate. AAU undertakes basic, strategic and applied research aimed at improving agricultural productivity, resource-use efficiency, environmental sustainability and economic opportunities along the agricultural value chain.

Its research activities address important challenges affecting the agricultural systems of Assam and the North-Eastern Region:

  • Crop productivity
  • Genetic improvement
  • Disease and pest management
  • Soil and water conservation
  • Climate adaptation
  • Postharvest management
  • Value addition
Research is particularly relevant to the diverse agroecological conditions of the region, characterised by high rainfall, extensive flood-prone areas, acidic soils and varied cropping environments. The University’s research programmes seek to develop location-specific technologies and production practices suited to these conditions.

The University also recognises the importance of frontier research areas, including biotechnology, advanced crop improvement, sustainable natural resource management and emerging technologies for agricultural development. Its research mandate extends beyond primary agricultural production to the development of business opportunities and employment throughout the production-to-consumption chain.

Extension Education and Technology Transfer

Agricultural extension represents the third major mandate of AAU. The University seeks to ensure that scientific knowledge and research-generated technologies reach farmers, rural entrepreneurs and other stakeholders for practical application.

Extension activities are directed towards improving the adoption of scientifically validated agricultural practices, strengthening farmers’ technical capabilities and enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural production systems.

Through its network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), research stations and other extension programmes, the University facilitates:

  • Farmer training
  • Field demonstrations
  • Technology assessment
  • Capacity development
  • Dissemination of agricultural information

These activities provide an important link between laboratory research, field-level validation and practical adoption by farming communities. They also create opportunities to obtain feedback from farmers and other stakeholders, enabling research programmes to respond more effectively to emerging agricultural problems and local requirements.

Global and National Network

National and International Academic and Research Collaborations

Assam Agricultural University recognises institutional collaboration as an important mechanism for strengthening agricultural education, research and technological development.

The University has established collaborative arrangements with national and international universities, agricultural research institutes, scientific organisations, government agencies and other institutions. These partnerships provide frameworks for joint research, student and faculty exchange, postgraduate research training, sharing of scientific information, capacity development and technology-oriented cooperation.

Such collaborations are especially relevant for addressing interdisciplinary challenges in crop improvement, agricultural biotechnology, horticulture, food processing, natural resource management, climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable production systems.

By strengthening institutional linkages and promoting the exchange of scientific expertise, these arrangements support the University’s objective of advancing research capabilities and developing human resources equipped to address emerging agricultural challenges.
